Yesterday Croatians voted for the 10th Croatian Parliament since independence in 1990. The biggest accomplishment last night was that democracy prevailed and that for 30 years Croatia has been democratically electing her leaders. No democracy is perfect, but it gives all people in society the opportunity to forge the future of their country.
A central topic of discussion with regards to the Croatian population outside of the nation’s borders is those citizens living in neighbouring Bosna and Hercegovina. With so large of a Croatian population living in BiH, it’s necessary to provide them with a pathway to higher and more distinct representation in the Croatian parliament.
A pertinent issue with diaspora voting however, is that voter turnout is often much less than it could and should be. Often times this is a result of no polling stations near Croatian communities abroad, but in some cases, there is also a sentiment that diaspora votes are negligible in the real outcome of the election.

They publically stood up for our right to vote and ultimately the government caved!
If you are a Croatian Canadian, you have the right to contact your local MPs. The power of the pen (or keyboard) is more powerful than any sword. People can assemble to protest in the hundred of thousands, but why can we not vote due to social distancing?
