ABOUT FAQ
Intro
In 2009, members of the Croatian community in British Columbia began an initiative to recognize Croatian as an approved second language course in BC schools. This initiative has now been furthered with a collaboration between the University of Zagreb, the University of British Columbia, UBC’s Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies, the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia and Croatian community associations in Canada. An agreement has been reached to allow high school students in British Columbia to study Croatian through an online program delivered by Croaticum at the University of Zagreb. Upon successful completion of a course, students will be issued a certificate which can be presented to their high school for inclusion as an external course on their transcript. This program of studies will be accepted towards meeting the second language requirements for admission into UBC. Students who successfully complete a course will also be issued credits under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). ECTS credits are transferrable to university credits allowing high school students to earn credits towards their future university studies.
The course will be taught by Croaticum – Centre for Croatian as a Second and Foreign Language at the University of Zagreb.
The language program will be taught by instructors based in Croatia who are certified to teach the Croatian language. Croaticum is the oldest and largest institution engaged in teaching and research of Croatian as a second and foreign language and is renowned for its tradition, expertise and knowledge. Croaticum’s program can be listed as an external course on a student’s high school transcript. UBC Admissions has approved of the program as meeting the second language requirements for admission into UBC and can satisfy similar requirements at other post-secondary institutions. Students will earn ECTS credits which are transferrable towards future university credits.

A student does not need a second language to graduate but students do need a second language to be accepted in some post-secondary institutions. In order to graduate in British Columbia, students must accumulate 80 credits between Grade 10 and 12, 52 of which are for mandatory courses and 28 are for elective courses. External courses do not count towards graduation credits but by taking an external second language course such as that offered by Croaticum, students will have an additional slot to take an elective course that can help a student raise their grade point average.
For example, Mateja is interested in applying to the Faculty of Science at UBC when she graduates. To get in, she needs a high grade point average but she has struggled with French and this has lowered her GPA. Mateja instead takes Croatian through the online Croaticum program knowing that this program will satisfy UBC’s second language requirements if she completes it up to the Grade 11 level. Now that she no longer has to take French, she instead takes Chemistry knowing that she can achieve a good letter grade in this course. She raises her GPA by taking a course she is good at and improves her chances of getting accepted into UBC.
The 2021-2022 school year, the first year of the Croaticum online program for Canadian high school students was successfully completed. This was a pilot program offering one course at the CEFR A1 and A2 levels (beginner level). Students were of different proficiency levels at the beginning of the course and the teacher accommodated those levels within the one course.
In BC, students do not need a second language to graduate from high school but do need a second language for admission into UBC and SFU. UBC has the higher requirement of a Grade 11 level for admission. UBC determined that an A2 level (either CEFR A2.1 or A2.2) would satisfy their requirement. SFU requires only an introductory language course (a CEFR A1 Course)
Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a certificate of completion in which students can submit to their high school. Since last year was the pilot course, students may still face difficulty receiving their high school credit. If you face difficulty, contact Jasmina Kucic, the Crodiaspora Croatian Language Coordinator at jasmina@crodiaspora.com
Croaticum issues 4 ECTS credits upon successful completion of a course. ECTS credits are transferrable to university credits. High school students can earn credits towards their future university studies.
Students upon completion of the program will receive a certificate which they can submit to their university to transfer their ECTS credits to University credits.
UBC requires successful completion of a second language up to the Grade 11 level. SFU requires a Grade 11 second language which can be satisfied with a one-year introductory level Grade 11 second language course. Other BC post-secondary institutions have no second language requirement for admissions.
UBC Admissions has confirmed that Croaticum’s Croatian language courses meet the admissions requirements for UBC when completed up to the Grade 11 level. Students may either ask their high school to list the external course on the high school issued transcript or submit their Croaticum issued certificates of successful course completion during the admissions process. UBC Admissions has confirmed that certificates will be accepted.
Similarly, SFU Admissions has stated that these courses will meet the admissions requirements if they are listed on the high school transcript.
Students will be assessed by Croaticum to determine their language competency and will be taught at a level commensurate with their ability. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be issued a certificate indicating course completion and CERFL level achieved. This certificate can be presented to your high school to be added as an external course on your transcript.
If you have successfully completed the A2.2 course, you have the prerequisite for the B1.1 course. When you register, place that the student has an A2.2 proficiency and in the additional notes section place that you have successfully completed the course last year. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to the Crodiaspora Croatian language Coordinator Jasmina Kucic at jasmina@crodiaspora.com
UBC Admissions has advised that for the purposes of admission a student must achieve a level of ability that is equivalent to a Grade 11 language course. Croaticum will assess your language competency to determine if you meet the requirements. Please note, that if you do not pass the stringent requirements set by Croaticum, you will still need to meet your Grade 11 language course for university admission.

Since the course is delivered online, Croaticum requests that students have a computer, a webcam, and a headset with a microphone. Croaticum requires that students set up in a quiet area of the home and if there are multiple children in your household that are taking the course that they each have their own laptop and are separated into different rooms. This is to ensure that no audio issues occur during teaching and to keep order in the online classroom.
Only students that are registered in the course are allowed to attend the course. Classes will not be recorded, and any recording and distribution of class material is strictly prohibited. All classroom expectations can be found in Croaticum’s learning agreement and we encourage you to make yourself aware of these rules and requirements.
